Indian Head Massage is a holistic therapy that can balance body, mind and spirit, and promote health and well-being. The stress of modern life, poor diet and lifestyle and pollution can all unbalance and block our energy. Indian Head Massage is an invaluable way to rebalance and encourage healing as well as being used as a preventative tool against disease. The traditional art of Indian Head Massage is based on the ancient system of medicine known as ‘Ayurveda’, which has been practised in India for thousands of years. Indian Head Massage has evolved from a technique, practised by families all over India as part of their everyday life, into a very comprehensive, popular and fast growing therapy practised world wide. Although the term ‘Indian Head Massage’ suggests a treatment restricted to the head only, massage is also performed on the neck, shoulders, upper back and upper arms. It is a very safe, simple, natural and gentle treatment usually performed with the receiver in a sitting position. It requires no special equipment and can be carried out through clothes. A complete Indian Head Massage treatment takes approximately 30 minutes. Benefits of Indian Head Massage: Physiological Benefits: Circulatory System – IHM improves the blood supply to every part of the body. It distributes fresh blood carrying vital supplies of oxygen and nutrients to the cells, and takes away their waste products such as carbon monoxide. As the tissues are nourished, healing is encouraged. Lymphatic System – IHM boosts the efficiency of the lymphatic system. Any toxins, waste products and excess fluid that have accumulated in the tissues can be eliminated. The body’s defence mechanisms are stimulated, enabling it to fight off infections and recover more rapidly from illness. As the body’s immunity to disease is strengthened, it becomes far less susceptible to coughs, colds and other illnesses. Muscular System – IHM is an excellent therapy for relieving pain and stiffness in the muscles of the face, scalp, neck, upper back and shoulders. Tense muscles can cause pain and the IHM movements stretch and separate the muscle fibres so that muscles are able to relax and function to their fullest capacity. Tension headaches, and aches and pains in the neck and shoulders can be reduced considerably by this therapy. Skeletal System – IHM can ease stiffness in the joints, thereby increasing mobility in the neck and shoulder area. Any adhesions in the joints which are impairing flexibility can be broken down and the range of movement increased. Stiffness and pain arising from skeletal conditions such as arthritis can be reduced, providing more ease of movement. Hair: IHM increases the circulation to the scalp, thus promoting hair growth. The hair can become strong, shiny and healthy as blood flow to the follicles is stimulated, bringing a good supply of nutrients and oxygen necessary for new hair growth. The sebaceous glands which secrete sebum, the hair’s natural conditioner, are stimulated, giving the hair a glossy sheen. Skin: IHM improves circulation to the skin, promoting a healthy, glowing complexion. The shedding of dead skin cells is encouraged and fresh cells exposed which gives the skin a healthier appearance. The sebaceous and sweat glands are stimulated, thereby improving their function and ensuring that waste products are more efficiently eliminated through the pores. Sebum helps to keep the skin soft and supple and the sweat glands unblock any clogged pores and remove toxins. As with regular massage, the condition, colour, texture and tone of the face can improve, reducing the appearance of fine wrinkles and giving the face a younger appearance. Eyes: IHM relaxes and sooths tense eye muscles. Eyes strain can be alleviated and eyes can become brighter and clearer. Nose: IHM can be excellent for relieving nasal congestion and conditions such as sinusitis. The facial massage encourages mucus to be eliminated and helps to improve our sense of smell. Jaw: IHM can help to alleviate jaw problems. As we clench our teeth and ‘grin and bear it’, this creates a great deal of tension in the jaw area which can easily be dispelled via facial massage. Psychological Benefits: Stress and Tension: IHM can be excellent for relieving stress and tension. A certain amount of ‘positive’ stress can be healthy, but we all have our own stress threshold and prolonged or high levels of stress can result in exhaustion, both physically and mentally. IHM helps to release endorphins from the brain, which counteract the stress hormones and makes us feel good. Improved concentration: IHM increases the supply of oxygen to the brain. This can relieve mental fatigue and can improve clarity of thought and concentration. Creativity and new ideas can flow much more easily and productivity can be increased. Raised energy levels: IHM can increase our energy levels. Any energy that has become stagnant and blocked by tension can be released and allowed to flow freely. During a treatment a deep sense of peace and tranquillity may be induced, followed by an increase in energy levels. The mind and body is allowed to switch off and recharge and individuals may feel energised and full of vitality after a treatment. Subtle/Spiritual Benefits: IHM works on the body’s subtle energy centres, otherwise known as charkras. These centres can be unblocked, balanced and aligned at the end of a treatment so the balance and harmony may be restored to the body, mind and spirit. Recommended reading:
