Reflexology is an ancient and gentle form of healing that has been passed from generation to generation for centuries. Throughout history feet have represented mobility, security and grounding. According to Greek legend feet symbolised the soul, with any lameness being perceived as weakness of spirit, whilst in ancient Egypt the ‘soles’ of the feet were removed during mummification to liberate the ‘soul’ from physical bondage and commitment to the earth plane. Over the years countless people have found relief from extreme discomfort by turning to reflexology when other methods have failed. It is a therapy that provides natural healing for everyone with its simplicity and uncomplicated effectiveness in harmonising the whole. Reflexology is the firm, but gentle, massage and manipulation of reflexes in both feet to:
The stimulation of latent healing abilities within the body can create a healthy, harmonious state, ideal for efficient physical, emotional and intellectual functioning of the whole. This natural form of healing has stood the test of time as simple, safe, non-invasive therapy which is now practised world wide. Reflexology massage stimulates reflexes throughout the body since all bodily parts, organs, systems and glands are accurately reflected on the feet. Touching a specific reflex on the feet can, therefore, evoke a favourable, involuntary response in the corresponding part of the body. The state of the mind, body and soul are all truthfully reflected through the condition of the feet. For the healthy person, reflexology can offer:
For the less healthy, reflexology can:
Reflexology and modern medicine, used beneficially together, can be a dynamic combination. With a more holistic approach to healing, medical professionals in hospitals and surgeries worldwide are recognising the need for reflexology therapists to ease stress-related disorders and assist in speeding up the recovery/healing process. Reflexology therapy and modern medicine are an ideal combination of sophisticated modern technology and ancient knowledge and wisdom. Vertical Reflex Therapy Vertical Reflex Therapy (VRT) is a new and advanced reflexology technique that is usually used in conjunction with more traditional complementary therapies but can be a powerful treatment in its own right. It was developed by Lynne Booth, an experienced reflexologist who runs a private practice in Bristol. She also teaches VRT throughout the UK and abroad. Unlike traditional reflexology where the client reclines during a treatment, in VRT the client stands and the reflexes on the top of the feet are worked. VRT treatments are much shorter than the traditional reflexology treatments and are usually combined with traditional reflexology or another complementary therapy such as massage. When combined with another treatment, VRT is used at the beginning and end of the treatment for a maximum of 5 minutes. The response of weight bearing reflexes is much stronger and the effects are felt more quickly by the client – familiar orthopaedic problems such as back, hip and knee pain respond particularly well to VRT as do a number of other conditions including IBS and ME.
