Sports and Remedial Massage Therapy (SRMT) is defined as ‘the application of manipulation and stretch methods to the muscle and connective tissues of the body for the purpose of enhancing athletic performance’, but you don’t have to be a sports person or athlete to benefit. Anyone who is suffering from an injury, reduced mobility, repetitive strain and/or postural problems could notice an immediate, if not complete, improvement after just one session. Many athletes use sports massage as an essential part of their preparation for events and recovery afterwards. It also helps to maintain peak physical fitness when incorporated into a training programme. SRMT involves the application of techniques that work at a deeper level than therapeutic/holistic massage and is used for the treatment and rehabilitation of the body's soft tissues which include muscles, tendons and ligaments. When you attend for your first appointment (and prior to any treatment taking place) a full consultation will be done to accurately establish the background to your problem. You may be asked to remove some of your clothing so that a number of basic movement tests can be conducted. These are done to establish the strength and mobility of the affected joints and/or muscles. An appropriate treatment plan will then be agreed and will usually consist of massage and stretching techniques, rehabilitation advice and self treatment information – these will be structured to benefit your individual requirements and circumstances. Your first appointment will be for one hour, but thereafter appointments for 30 minutes or one hour are available. Recommended reading:
