Massage is a form of soft tissue manipulation that has developed over thousands of years and has been used throughout this time to restore and promote health. Practitioners use their hands to manipulate the soft tissues of the body, particularly muscles. It can be used for relaxation, stimulation or rehabilitation of the whole body or part of it and promotes suppleness in the muscles, improves circulation and reduces stress. Massage is beneficial to all body systems and is a natural and effective way to treat both physical and psychological conditions. It is a non-invasive therapy with the following benefits and effects: Soothing: Touch is known to be soothing and comforting and massage uses touch to sooth and relax the body. Since 75% of disease is thought to be caused by stress, massage – which reduces stress – may help to improve overall health Stimulating: The systems of the body are stimulated and activated by massage. It therefore encourages improved circulation; aids digestion, waste removal and neural communication; invigorates and relaxes muscles and promotes cell regeneration. Comforting: Touch is natural and comforting. People of all ages use touch to gain a sense of security and well-being. Instinctive: When we knock or hurt ourselves we often use our hands to rub or touch the affected area. Massage is an extension of this natural and instinctive method of soothing aches and pains. Safe: Massage is a safe, non-invasive, natural therapy. Massage during Pregnancy: Most forms of complementary therapy can be used by pregnant women once they have entered their second trimester. Massage is particularly beneficial as it keeps the muscles and soft tissues supple, reduces tension and stress in the body and relieves aches and pains created by overworked muscles and poor posture.
